What is the Learning Culture?

A interesting article by Trovas (2022) explain that a Learning Culture is an environment that indicate and motivate individuals and organizational learning, and where both acquiring and sharing knowledge is prioritized, valued and rewarded.

A learning culture exists when every employee is engaged in learning, for their own benefit, for the benefit of their team and for the benefit of the organisation as a whole. It’s when employees want to learn how to do their job better, how to help a system work more effectively, how to improve on a product or service, how to solve problems. It’s about having the right collective mindset, where everyone is bought into the idea of continuous learning and continuous improvement.

As per the popular article written by Dumesnil (2019) There are nine strategies for creation a Learning Culture in the organization.

  • Develop personalized learning plan
  • Give personalized carrier coaching
  • Lead by example
  • Provide the right rewards
  • Have the right learning environment
  • Encourage knowledge sharing
  • Ingrain learning in your hiring process
  • Create a meaningful learning programme

The potential for creating a earning culture is enormous. But only 4% of all organizations have developed such a culture. What can we learn from these organization? Why Learning Cultures are important for success

Learning cultures affect all areas of your organization. "In fact, an IBM study focusing on the value of employee training showed that 84% of employees within the best performing organizations are receiving  the training they need compared with 16% in the worst-performing companies. And in another recent eLearning report, 94% of employees said investment in training and development is one of the major reasons they would decide to stay in a role for longer"(O'neill, n.d.).

A Learning Culture is motivate continuous success across organization to achieve their business goals, targets and keep up with the pace of change.A company which is having a strong Learning Culture must have an organizational mission, vision and values that align with and support employee development needs (Tenny. n.d.).

Conclusion

This article brings a broad concept commonly used in practice to describe the ideal set up for organizational learning. I suggest that improving learning culture would provide a more practical and easily definable concept that all level can implement. Leaning Culture can be more greatly influenced by professionals in leadership positions who have the ability to mould the more general culture withing the organization (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, 2020).
